Some things just stick with you...

My son is now 6 years old and I have become more aware that whatever I say/do, he'll always remember. Okay, I admit I do have memories going back to when I was 2, but they're kind of hazy.

Some of my favorite things of my childhood were the day trips we'd take with my Dad. Cultural stuff. During our school breaks, my father would occasionally take a day off from work and take us on "adventures", like a ferry boat across the bay, day at the zoo, long bike rides on Sundays, and, of course, museums. My Mom was not into museums and such, so we'd have some alone time with Daddy.

Museu da QuintaI always loved the Museum of Natural History at Quinta da Boa Vista, in Rio. I remember vividly the noise of the floorboards creaking when you walked in. But the most impressive thing was what my Dad said about the exhibits. There was a wax face of a woman, and the nose was missing. It was so gross and terrifying to a perhaps 5yo -can't remember how old I was. Well, I guess the woman suffered from some sort of flesh-eating disease, but my Dad said she was like that because she got a germ from drinking water from the faucet. That was totally ENOUGH for me, I was so deadly afraid I'd never drink water from the faucet (in Brazil the water is not exactly safe to drink as in the US).

I also remember this field trip we took in kindergarten, to this huge firehouse. AMAZING! The firefighters demonstrated so many things, they jumped from buildings, they used a rope to go down a wall, they slid down the poles. Oh, yeah, there was the thick white foam we played with. I remember the white cafeteria, the sandwiches and the little cups of groselha juice (yuck, I hated that, I drank nothing). We had another field trip to the beach, and I deadly afraid of going into the water because the kids found this huge sea urchin, and I didn't want to hurt my feet. Oh well...

Nail PolishBringing the past back has its price. I had an argument with my Mom yesterday. She can't believe I remember this stuff. My friend's daughter turned 9 - I feel old! - and had a manicure to celebrate her birthday. So I reminded my Mom that I also had my first manicure when I was 9. I grew up around women mostly - 4 aunts and 1 uncle (I'm also the oldest of all my cousins and there was only one boy). So, naturally, I watched everyone getting their nails done - one time my Dad's cousins came over with blue nail polish on and I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Anyway, just about every week I was asking my Mom if I could have my nails done. Finally, at the occasion of my cousin's baptism, she finally gave in. As my Mom was doing my nails, my 6-yo sister walks in and demands to have hers done too, which my Mom promptly agrees. What? I waited so long for this, and my sister just gets it with no effort. Just to add insult to injury, my 3yo cousin wanted to copy us so my aunt did hers too. I was devastated.

So I had an argument with my Mom that the oldest kids always suffer, since they have to conquer everything, and the younger ones just "get lucky". She agreed with me, since she's the oldest of 4, and my Dad is also the oldest, so I complained to her that they should have been more responsible, that they should have denied my sister to get her nails done until she was 9.

But life is not fair, what can I do? Everything that took me years to get, my sister just had it handed to her. Except, of course, her driver's license. THAT she had to wait 3 more years to get. Oh yeah, but she can't ride the bus to go to her friend's house and do a group assignment. I'd have to drive her... Oy vey!

When she loved me

Took T to see Toy Story 1 & 2 re-release in 3D. I just love those movies, as well as anything Pixar will do.

So, naturally, I bawled my eyes out when Sarah McLachlan sings "When she loved me" just like I did when the movie came out 10 years ago. I was thinking of my old toys, all my dolls my *evil parents* (LOL) made me part with.

Go ahead... watch this and bawl along with me:

Sound of Music mode on

When I was little girl, I watched "The Sound of Music" every single day. Our VCR was one of those that had a remote connected with a wire LOL. My cousin had taped it from the TV and I would watch it over and over again. My mother would get fed up sometimes - just like we do when our kids *have* to watch Monsters Inc every day.

Most of the times we watched all the way until the wedding scene, and then turn it off, cause after that the Nazis invade Austria and things go downhill.

But when we did watch till the end, it was amusing to count how many times the lady bows at the festival. My aunt and I used to count it out loud. I think it was 23 times :P

So, I was chatting with some friends in Orkut how much I love TSOM - what's my nickname, again? - and we all found out we have a Julie Andrews virtual fan club. We all want to go to Saulzburg to sing and dance - how sad is it? LOL

I was very fortunate that when I visited NYC in 1996, Julie Andrews was playing the main part in Victor/Victoria. My father and I were fortunate to get tickets (and a guy who looked exactly like Kyle MacLachlan was next to us). It was a dream come true and I even shed a little tear.

So, while searching youtube, I found these. Pretty cool!

BTW, Nicholas Hammond, who played Friedrich, also played Spiderman in the 1970's series.

10!

Exactly 10 years ago I boarded a plane from Rio de Janeiro to Washington, DC, connecting in Newark, NJ. The immigration line was so long when I arrived I missed my domestic connection and had to be on stand-by for the next flight.

It's easy to remember the date. The day I arrived was the day JFK Jr. died. I remember seeing all the commotion in the airport, people looking at the monitors, their sad faces. It took me a while to grasp what was going on, I was still sleepy.

It was supposed to be a 2-year stint, but hey, I'm still here!

So, I guess, happy anniversary to me!

Hey, Mauro same to you!!!!

Shocked!

Seriously, I think I've seen everything now.

There's a couple, they're friends with my Dad and it's the guy's third marriage. My Mom was telling me the things they say about each other.

First, he told his wife "you're not the wife I loved the most but I'm going to spend the rest of my life with you".

I dream of GeniePretty sweet, huh? Especially for a guy who's been divorced twice.

Now it's the wife's turn, talking about her husband.

"He's my master and I do everything he says, I'm here to please him".

That was my queue to start whistling the theme from "I dream of Genie"... This is 2009, people!!!!! How can someone act like that????

Happy 5th Birthday!

Today my little T turns 5!!!!

He was born on Tuesday, November 25th, 2003, 8:17 am, 9 lbs 3.2 oz (4,170kg) and 21 1/2 inches (55 cm). Yes, it was a c-section :P

I can't believe how big he has gotten. He's not my baby anymore, by the time he's 6 he'll be as tall as his Mommy!

I have a ton of photos. It was really hard to narrow it down, but here's a bit of his life in images (please click to enlarge).

Friday Foto Finish Fiesta

As in http://carriestuckmann.blogspot.com

My little T is growing up so fast! He will be 5 years old in about 2 months.

I found this picture the other day in my computer. It's one of my favorites. I think he was 4-5 months old. Look how big he is (he was born 9lbs 3.2oz, approximately 4,170kg).

I love these little rolls on his arms - Michelin baby! Oh, those big cheeks! Added the funky shades... doesn't he look like a miniature of Bono from U2? :)

Love it!

me at the zoo

This photo was taken by my father when I was about 2 years old. He had taken me to the zoo. While there were giant animals, such as giraffes and elephants around me, I suddenly stop. I notice this little ant and kept staring at what it was doing.

I think it's a very sweet photo and my father had a great eye to catch it.

The funny thing is last week I got an email from my dad with the subject "does that look familiar?" When I opened it, I saw this:

Small Wonder

It's a print called "Small Wonder" by Donald Zolan

Now, who has grounds for a lawsuit? :P

And she's gold!

Madonna

Yes, people, Madonna is 50 today!

I remember twirling around the house singing "Everybody", her first hit back in 1983-84. The first of so many. I can probably sing most of her songs by heart, even the ones that were not a big hit.

She most certainly was a big influence in my life, musically. Plus she helped me learn English too!

One day, I will still see her perform live. While I don't, I'll stick to her CDs.

Groupie!

I was reading my friend Sunshine's take on concerts - and I mean non-Wiggles stuff - and I started remembering the concerts I went to when I was young---er...

The greatest frustration of my life is that I've never seen Madonna perform live. Seriously! She played back home when I was 15 and my father didn't let me go. All my friends in high school went and I was so mad. To top it off, my cousin got married on the same day, and from the reception I could see the all concert lights. I was furious. I still tell my dad I never forgave him for that. In 2001 I had another shot at it, but the concerts were sold out. Then after that she totally snubbed the DC area. And I just can't afford to go to NYC to see her. I have a full time job and a kid...

My dad was not fond of concerts. I remember when A-Ha played live in 1989 and both my aunts went. He didn't let me go either.

But I do remember the very first concert I went to: Roxette. It was on May 9th 1992. Yes, I remember! I was going crazy. Roxette is my favorite band, ever! It's so funny that here in the US Roxette and A-ha are one-hit wonders. I own all Roxette CDs - even the one they did in Spanish - and there are many, many wonderful songs that were huge hits all over the world, except in the US. Well, I guess it was before youtube era...

I saw Roxette again in 1995 and that was the best concert ever!!! I was in the mosh pit, a couple of feet from Marie Fredriksson. My friend was feeling bad and threw up right next to me, and I didn't even notice! That's how insanely cool it was.

I feel sad Roxette is no longer together and that Marie's health is not the same after her bout of cancer. I do hope she's alright.

I did see other concerts. I saw the Rolling Stones live, which was amazing, and opened by the Spin Doctors (that was not a great opener). It was so cool to see a living legend, live!

I also saw Whitney Houston, right around the time she did the Bodyguard and she was on top of the charts. I saw Supergrass and Smashing Pumpkins together. I saw The Cure, and I was in the front row. If I reached up, I could touch Robert Smith, who was really nice to us. It was late, it was not incredibly packed, and he just stayed near where we were to sing. "Yooooooooou are just like heaven, yoooooooooooou".

Oh, and let's not forget U2!

I think that was it... Really good times!

After that it was just Sesame Street Live and a string of Wiggles concerts... tee hee

But... George Michael, here I go!
